Broadband Internet in Spain
The European Commission has approved the plan proposed by the Spanish government to encourage the provision of broad band Internet conexion in some of Spain's remote rural areas. Brussels has even agreed to help finance the scheme.
Spain's socialist government wants broadband Internet access to be available in rural communities regarded as too remote to be profitable by Spanish telephone companies and internet providers. State subsidies of up to 26.3 million euros and 120 million euros of interest-free loans will be offered in an attempt to extend the availability of fast Internet access all over Spain.
After studying the plan to ensure that the subsidies would not represent a violation of the principle of fair competition within the telecommunications industry, the European Commission has decided that the subsidies offered within the "national plan to extend broad band access to rural and isolated areas" will only be used to finance the introduction of broadband in those places considered to be at a technological disadvantage because of their location or low population.
The call for tender was published on 22nd March and extends to all kinds of internet provider companies and technology (ADSL, cable, wireless, satellite...). Applications will be accepted until 23rd April.

Telefonica have "taken the bull by the horns" by being the first to offer free national phone calls to all their Adsl broadband customers as the race to connect households hots up, see their English distributors website http://www.telefonicainenglish.com
We have phoned telefonica many times for broadband but no response. We live near Lliber 5 minutes from Benissa. Live in Spain up to six months and are desperate to be able to link with friends and our broadband site in the UK. Please Please Telefonica. The new deal is supposed to be for out of the way areas deprived of internet links - how about it. Dotandpete@Tiscali.co.uk
We live in Javea on an urbanisation and telefonica dont yet deliver here either, so wait rural communities, get the towns and surrounding areas online first.
For those of you in the general area of Javea/Denia - even Lliber etc, I have a house on an urbanization and Telefonica were not interested in providing me with a connection from their nearest point. I had to do it privately and fortunately came across a genius who specializes in this kind of thing - Juan Carlos - his number is 676742036.

I managed this by discovering a genius - Juan Carlos - 676742036 who connected me very professionally and economically. He does all kinds of telecommunications things.
