New Spanish immigration laws
The Spanish Government intends to further modify the immigration laws in Spain and has announced that one of the measures it wants to include in the reform is the legalisation of immigrants who are illegally employed, including agricultural workers (mainly seasonal fruit and veg pickers) and women working as cleaners or child-carers in many Spanish homes. It is much more common to employ domestic staff in Spain than in other European countries and literally thousands of illegal immigrants find it relatively easy to find employment cleaning houses or looking after children while parents work. The Socialist government hopes that by legalising the situation of these workers, they will reduce illegal employment because for the first time, employers will have to give their employees a legal contract, a legal wage, and will have to pay their seguridad social (national health payments).
The Spanish Defence Minister also announced new government policies regarding boats ferrying immigrants to Spain from the North African coast which until now have been turned back when intercepted by Spanish authorities. The whole illegal Africa to Europe ferry trade is a dirty business, with thousands of Africans paying ridiculously high sums of money to ruthless owners of flimsy vessels who tend to overcrowd their boats and enter Spanish waters off the coasts of the Canary Islands, Cadiz or Gibraltar. Each year Spanish police turn back boats packed with African immigrants, or rescue from the sea hundreds of Africans who have been ordered by the boat owner to jump off the boat and to swim the rest of the way and simply do not have the strength to continue. Most of them are returned to their country. Bodies are often washed up onto the beaches of Spain of Africans who have drowned in their attempt to reach the shore.

I agree. Europe may have been Christian in the past, but no longer so. In Italy, which is the seat of Catholicism, churches no longer draw Italians as it did before. It is now the Filipinos populating these Churches. Without these Filipinos, Catholicism would have closed down a lot of its churches on account of them being empty.

I am please that the gov't is doing something about the illegal immigrants. What I want to know is when these immigrants get their work permits and residence card and they wish to travel abroad, what documents will be given to them to travel with in and out of the country and not be stopped by immigration officers?

no doubt that europe is a highly developed place than rest of the world . europe can play an important role in bridging the gap between other religions and islam. so europe should give a chance for people of other religion to work there and exchange their values and bring harmony betwween west and east.

I read most of the comments already posted and I think a lot of them are certainly missing the point...
About the new Spanish immigration laws, although they look quite liberal, I rather think they will not help the immigrants as much as people may think and will probably not improve their standard of living in the host country either.Indeed, letting someone enter a national territory does not give them the right to have their basic human rights respected. To my mind the "immigration problem" Spain is facing is quite common (although to a lesser extent) to most European Union Countries. And for me immigration is not a problem because there are so many "poor, diseased, terrorist, drug dealers, ..." from third world countries who are "dying" for coming to "wonderful rich Europe". The real problem is inside Europe and the close-minded, ungrateful, patronising and forgetful mindset of its polpulation in general. Indeed, there is no European country (and even no country at all) which has built their wealth without the "support" (voluntary or not...) from others.
For instance, as a French citizen, I have for always been shocked at the fact that we have never been taught colonisation or slavery at school. However, and whatever people may say, these two events have been quite useful (and still are) for the country's economic and human development. More generally, what would be Europe without immigration and without its constant openess to the world? THIS is what makes this continent so special: its mixity at any level! And this is its most important wealth, even though European students are hardly ever taught so(and surprisingly, especially from those countries, which used to have a lot of colonies and slaves...)
Noone wants to leave their country. You really have to be desperate (or why maybe too ambitious) to let yourself die on a stinky, small boat heading to an uncertain destination! So do not worry: there will be no invasion of Europe soon because of the adoption of more "liberal" Spanish immigration laws! However, as we never know what we actually owe to someone we sometimes don't even want to see, we should be very careful with what we are thinking these days: WWII is 50 years old but human blindness incredibly much older...
As a French socialist, I entirely agree with this last posting person. Also, I really don't understand these people who complain and get uptight about "those random immigrants who want to eat our bread and steal our jobs and live off our generous social system and don't want to be part of society". With a mentality like that, who would want to learn our language and our culture! I can assure you, most immigrants do try to learn our language, get a job and be a part of society. But when we repay them with racist gafiti on the dingy appartments they are forced to live in, we shouldn't be surprised if we end up with delinquance!
